Anyone care to rate my chances of getting a Court Elizabethan gown (or a fairly high status one at least) made by easter if I devote a sizeable chunk of my Christmas break to working on it...?
"Just" the gown, the underpinnings and smock already exist...
And while I'm asking questions What would you picture if a fabric was described as "tourmaline brocade"

Tourmaline brocade: well, it sounds gorgeous. I'd be envisioning something shading through the browns and purples. But I do have some large tourmaline crystals and they are basically mud-coloured, because if they were anything else I wouldn't have been able to afford them.

{grin!}
I suspect that if I am stupid enough to make the attempt (I would like to enter a masquerade and this is the only costume I have had anything close to inspiration for and Eastercons will never kick masquerades back into high-gear if people don't put the effort in to entering them) I suspect it will hinge on giving it a go over Christmas and seeing how far I get. If the lion's share is done then, I'll probably finish it for easter albeit in a tearing rush of last minute work ad all-nighters when I realize Easter is nearly up on us.
The sticking point is the fabric, You *know* the range of colours (and combinations of) that tourmaline comes in. What colour or comination says "tourmaline" to the biggest rpoportion of people?
To me, it's the "watermellon" green/pink combination...
And how do I get hold of gown's worth of an affordable multicolloured brocade....by Christmas?
These and other questions will all fail to be answetred in future installments of The Crazy Schemes that Teddy Comes up with While Bored!

Shall we make this an official Revive the Masquerade Conspiracy? I will if you will.

Revive the Masquerade Conspiracy
Okeydokey. Let's go for it.Bearign in mind that may have to withdraw if I don't get sufficiently far through it by the start of January.
Now I'll also have to prod Tom, Barbara & John, James & Shobah and whoever else was involved in The Plan for a group entry that was brought out of hybernation and dusted-off for discussion over coffee at WolrdCon.
